We were thrilled to host our first community event at the Teva ION Orchard Store, right in the heart of the city. The day was filled with excitement. Not only did we journal and colour in our Teva totebags, we had the chance to interview Charmaine from Sun Bear Art Club. We hope her insights inspire you to embrace creativity and live each day as an adventure.
What's your spirit animal and why would it love wearing Tevas?
My spirit animal is definitely a bear 🐻. This bear would love wearing Tevas because he's a laid-back character, and Tevas are perfect for his relaxed lifestyle. They're versatile, suitable for any environment, and go well with any outfit. I can easily picture my bear wandering through the woods, wearing his Tevas, looking for the ideal spot to nap.
What was the first creative pursuit that ignited your passion for design?
One of my earliest creative memories is painting a small wooden drawer set with my mom. It was incredibly liberating to choose any color and draw whatever I liked. The tactile sensation of brushing on wet paint was also very therapeutic. Even though the finished drawer wasn't a masterpiece, we still use it to hold spare change. Reflecting on this, I realize my passion for design is rooted more in the creative process itself than the final result. Art is about enjoying the moment, the act of creating, and the freedom to express oneself.
What are some inspirations that have impacted your design journey?
My design journey has been shaped by moments of painful rejection. I've been told that a child could doodle better than me, and I've had job interviewers question my qualifications due to my lack of formal education in design (before I earned my degree). These setbacks often halted my progress. Each piece of negative feedback led me to close a business, abandon an idea, or quit a job. However, I discovered that nothing makes me happier than spreading the love of good design and empowering others to create. My experiences with rejection have motivated me to encourage others not to give up just because someone doesn't appreciate their work.
What is your most adventurous story?
I live adventurously every day by embracing the unknown and allowing the universe to surprise me. I enjoy doing something different each day. Since starting my own studio, every month has been unique. One of my recent adventures was an impromptu trip to Milan with no itinerary. I booked my flights and accommodations but left the rest to chance. Each day, someone would offer to show me around, suggest new activities, or recommend places to eat. Everything unfolded perfectly, and I met so many kind and helpful people. This experience reminded me that embracing uncertainty can lead to unexpected and wonderful opportunities.
